Hurricane Ida has been one of the most powerful storms on record in the US and has caused havoc across the country including causing at least 10 deaths — including nine in the North East of the country and leaving millions without powers. It has set rain records and sparked tornadoes and caused over US$15 billion of insurance losses. The entire town of New Orleans was left without power and millions of people that evacuated are still trying to work out the damage to homes, schools, roads and property in their local area.

Storms such as this are likely to be more powerful with climate change but the exact frequency is not set in stone. Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana and Mississippi 16 years ago but it it not yet clear when the next one hurricane of this size will be.
